recording network latency in squid logs

Hello,

I'm using squid (on a i386-linux box) as an HTTP proxy. I'd like my
squid logs to record network latencies between client-squid and
squid-server exchanges. I'm thinking of extending squid to employ
network packet filters to intercept relevant TCP packets and thereby
calculate latencies. Is this a reasonable approach?
