Fine, so auth_rewrite remains. The first part of the question remains
however. Should further NTLM development depend on auth_rewrite, or is
NTLM development now a thread of it's own?

If you wish. To me it seems mostly like an overhead for future ntlm
related development/fixes. Not that I actually care.
